A former welder’s widow is suing dozens of corporations over claims that the death of her husband was linked to his job-related exposure to asbestos particles. Alma Singleton is suing the companies individually and as the special executor of deceased Curtis Singleton’s estate. Alma has filed a suit on January 13 in the circuit court of St. Clair County. The defendants named in the suit include: Aurora Pump Co; Pneumo Abex; and MetLife. The defendants are accused of failure to warn and negligence. Pneumo Abex and MetLife are accused of conspiracy and covering up information.
The complaint states that Curtis was exposed to hazardous asbestos fibers during most of his working life. According to the suit, Curtis worked as a welder, inspector and carman at Southern Pacific/Cotton Belt. Additionally, he worked at Burlington Northern as a laborer, the lawsuit states. During all these jobs, Curtis inhaled and was exposed to large amounts of cancer-causing asbestos fibers emanating from various products manufactured, distributed, installed, or sold by the defendant companies, the complaint says.
Because of his repeated exposure to large amounts of asbestos dust and fibers, Curtis contracted lung cancer, the suit claims. He was diagnosed with the disease on 18th June, 2013, according to the suit. Curtis died from asbestos-related lung cancer in 2013 August, just two months following the diagnosis, the lawsuit states.
Alma Singleton is seeking more than $50,000 in damages from each of the defendants for each count, in addition to court costs and attorney fees. Asbestos exposure is linked to several medical conditions such as lung cancer, asbestosis, pleural plaques and mesothelioma. Though all these conditions are catastrophic, mesothelioma is the deadliest disease caused by asbestos exposure.
Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma
Asbestos exposure is the one and only known cause for mesothelioma, a fatal cancer affecting the mesothelium (a protective membrane that covers the cavities of lung, abdomen and chest). Asbestos was extensively used in the manufacturing of numerous commercial products until the 1980s. Because of this, most mesothelioma patients are the victims of occupational asbestos exposure.
